The people behind Glimpse

Meet the friendly faces that will be making your Glimpse experience that little bit more special.

Matt

Matt is an optometrist (which is handy) and one of the Glimpse business owners.

When he's not helping people's peepers he spends most of his time with his kids — Joe and Libby — who are a glorious pair of total fruit cakes. He's "a bit keen on cycling" (he'll downplay this until you're out on a ride with him, when suddenly he will tear off into the distance, leaving you lost somewhere in deepest Worcestershire) and he likes to play golf. Which, unlike cycling, he really is terrible at.

Growing up in Handsworth, North Birmingham, he was lucky enough to spend his childhood in the Scottish Highlands, the beaches of Wales and long, Sunday walks in the great parks of Brum. University took him to Manchester — the turncoat — where he met business partner and long term pal, Gerry. Frankly, the less documented about those years the better.

After qualifying in 2002 Matt decided that traveling was the way to go. After one complete circuit of the globe, he realised he couldn't avoid actual work any longer and, seeing sense, returned to Birmingham. By 2008 he had bought Brittain Opticians and had turned the small Harborne venue into a haven of independent eyewear and, in 2017, launched his second venue, Glimpse, at the historic Great Western Arcade.

Gerry

An eye for detail, which is handy for an Optometrist and a man with no grey areas in his life. It’s tough being Gerry!

He has been in Optics since 1993. It was clear that he was “not too bad” at the eye stuff so he quickly progressed from a Saturday job to a qualified Dispensing Optician, then to an Optometrist, then a Glaucoma specialist and now a director at Glimpse as well as The Oculist, in Peterborough.

Things are very black or white for Gerry. He's, shall we say, particular. Which is a useful quality in a man who wants your vision to be the best that it can be.

Outside Glimpse he likes to cook and indulges in the occasional fine wine. He skis when he's allowed to and he spends way too much time at children’s parties with his daughters. He also loves redesigning houses. And by "redesigning houses" we really mean knocking down walls.

Drew

Andrew Stroud prefers to be called Drew. So let’s start again. Drew is a training dispensing optician.

He was always detailed for greatness, narrowly missing out on the prestigious title of Heaviest Newborn (1985) weighing in at 5.5kgs. That’s a whopping 11lb in old money. “It was a near death experience for my dear mother,” says Drew, without a hint of exaggeration.

Over an eight year optic career he’s worked for some of the biggest names, in a raft of roles. He’s worked his way up from an optical assistant, via regional development officer and internal quality assessor. Whatever the hell they do.

In West Philadelphia, born and raised… Just kidding, He grew up in Gravesend, Kent and moved to Brum in 2017 specifically to work for Glimpse.

When Drew is not rocking the optical scene he enjoys mediocrity as a guitar player and the most medium of mediocrity in learning Polish. When he’s not fixing your vision, he’s answering the endless stream of ‘why?’ questions that come from his daughter. The poor fool.

Steph

Steph Wilson has good taste. She's big-up into cinema, fashion and optical frames and she promises she's not just saying the latter because she has a career in optical frames and her bosses are reading this. Oh, and she happens to be a qualified dispensing optician.

A background in Chemistry, Biology, Graphic Design and Photography she worked in an opticians behind the scenes before stepping on to the shop floor to learn about frames, styling and lenses. And she's never looked back.

She was sponsored (because she's smart like that) to be put through a dispensing opticians course at City and Islington College, before taking up her post at Glimpse with the job of making YOUR FACE even more beautiful than it is. Tough gig.

She's a self-confessed frames geek and has 13 pairs of glasses to date. She thinks this a lot, but she doesn't know that Gerry has over 70. Don't tell her.
In her personal life she likes taking drives in the country, having little adventures with her family, her friends and mainly her labrador.
